Striker Didier Drogba got the winner as Chelsea got by Valencia 2-1 in Champions League action. The Group B match was a huge win for Chelsea and new coach Avram Grant. Chelsea badly needed the win after losing manager Jose Mourinho two weeks ago. th minute. Elsewhere it was Goran Pandev getting a big goal in Lazio's 2-2 draw with Real Madrid. Spanish champions Real took a ninth minute lead when Dutch striker Van Nistelrooy took Wesley Sneijder's free kick past keeper Marco Ballotta. Lazio's Pandev tied it with a left-foot volley before Van Nistlerooy struck again but it was Pandev scored again to equalize it.

Also, Ricardo Quaresma scored the winner in stoppage time as 2004 champions Porto won 1-0 at Besiktas.

Werder Bremen lost in a Group C game 3-1 to Olympiakos. Also, Jermaine Jones and Kevin Kuranyi scored second half goals to give Schalke a 2-0 win at Norway's Rosenborg Trondheim. Benfica lost 1-0 at home to Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk with Jadson getting the goal in the Group D match.
